POSITION: Full Time Signed Language Interpreter Educational Assistant - Deming High School

                                                                                                                                              

BEGINNING DATE: 2017-2018 School Year

 

SALARY: $10.91 Per Hour; Grade 14e/ Step 1

                                                                                    

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicant must be highly qualified which requires one of the following to be eligible for the position:

  • AA Degree OR
  • 48 specific college hrs OR
  • Paraprofessional test (which will be scheduled after a person is offered the position)
  • Must hold ED:K-12 Credential from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf(RID)
  • Need ASL certification
  • Complete application on fill

 

Job Goal:

Provides instructional and/or general interpretation forstudents in the classroom, and on campus grounds and for school activities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assists the teacher in the preparation of materials and activities for classroom specific to Hearing Impaired student(s).

Assists small groups and individual students with classroom activities and activities as needed for interpretation.

Assists students in learning sequential skills and adjusts individual programs as directed with primary focus on interpretation.

Participates in staff meetings and in service training activities as appropriate to performance of duties.

Assists student(s) in the classroom with reading, math and other subjects, clarifying  through interpretation as needed.

Assists student(s) through interpretation with classroom and homework assignments.

Reports information about a child's development and behavior to teachers.

May perform after school tutoring.

May assist children with personal hygiene needs.

May perform cleaning activities of classrooms and related areas.

Maintains safety and security of children.

Performs related duties as required.

Maintain and provide to case manager documentation of strengths/deficits and communication needs of student(s).

 

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Techniques, policies and practices of children instruction.

Child discipline.

Emergency and safety procedures.

Policies and objectives of assigned programs.

School site and assigned, policies and procedures.

Basic principles and techniques of education.

Correct English usage.

Operation of modern office equipment including PC and related software.

First aid and CPR.

Educational needs of students with hearing impairment.

Effective interpretation strategies in a variety of settings, both formal and informal.

 

ABILITY TO:

Prepare a variety of records and reports.

Assist teachers in classroom educational activities.

Establish and maintain effective relationships with others.

Operate a variety of modern office equipment.

Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Assist with student health care needs and personal hygiene.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or general education degree (GED);  Educational course work and prior classroom experience preferred. 

CPR and First Aid training.

ASL Certification

Substitute teachers license preferred.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. 

Ability to write simple correspondence. 

Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, parents, and other employees of the organization.

Ability to effectively communicate with student (s) and others through spoken and signed language.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 

Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. 

Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

502 Educational Assistant K-12 license.
