JOB GOAL: To ensure the safe delivery of special education students to and from school.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Shall meet the same qualifications and licensing requirements as the regular driver.
Required to attend Special Education Transportation and an approved first aid course provided at the New Mexico Pupil Transportation Institute at the time of their attendance at the Institute.
Required to attend other special training programs as designated by the local district.
Obeys all regular school bus operational regulations established by federal, state and local policies, and follows traffic laws.
Maintains and keeps current transportation emergency information and other required reports confidential.
Withholds any food or drink from any student to prevent a choking hazard while the bus is in motion. Food and drink are allowed if written in an IEP and prescribed by a doctor.
Exercises patience, understanding, and mature judgment in working with a handicapped student.
Communicates effectively with parents and school staff.
Utilizes and safely operates the special equipment needed for each student’s seating, loading and unloading.
Knows the safest and most direct route to a hospital or recognized medical center.
Arranges the seating of students, when possible, to prevent emotional or physical disturbances (but allow “normal” interaction between students).
Explains bus rules to students and enforces them.
Maintains discipline and reports to the proper school authorities and/or parents when any unusual episodes, attitudes, etc., immediately and in detail, because they may have medical implications.
Must learn how to care for each student under the many circumstances that might occur while the students are on the bus. Attend IEP meetings to understand each student’s needs.
Uses the appropriate procedures to take in case of a traffic accident or breakdown as they relate to the exceptionalities of the students.
Maintains the bus schedule for pick-up and delivering of students as closely as safety will permit.
Ensures that a student is not left unattended in the bus or at the p.m. drop-off point.
Records in a daily log when each student is behaving abnormally for their condition and shall advise the appropriate officials accordingly. Follows the plan for emergency indicated on the student information care when problems or abnormal reactions occur. Assists each student in meeting Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) needs as indicated by appropriate school personnel in an IEP, such as learning to get on and off without assistance.
Utilize safe and correct lifting techniques for students that must be physically lifted on or off the bus.
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS: Commercial Driver’s License (Class B). First aid and CPR training desirable.
Physical Effort: Bends, stoops, lifts, climbs. Lifts, moves or carries up to 50 pounds of materials. Climbs to various heights and works in confined spaces. Operates large and small power driven machinery such as vacuum, sweeper, buffer or other similar equipment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED certificate and a CDL license with a Bus endorsement.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to others.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) with Passenger & School Bus endorsement. Valid DOT Health Certificate and 1st Aid/CPR certification.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in inside environmental conditions. The employee frequently works with a video display terminal for prolonged periods. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
TECHNOLOGY: Ability to use radio communications, understand modern instrument panels on school buses and operate a handheld device for inspections. Ability to use email as a way of communicating. |
