Qualifications:

Registered Nurse license.

Possess, or be eligible to apply for a valid/current New Mexico School Nurse License.

AA or Bachelor’s Degree based upon a four-year curriculum in an accredited college, or

a graduate of an accredited associate degree in nursing program.

Successful completion of an approved college curriculum (by the NM State Dept. of

Education) or approved program of college studies.

Minimum of two years successful experience as a nurse or school nurse (preferred).

Organization, communications and human relations skills.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.

Must become certified driver to transport students.

 

 

REPORTS TO:

            Principal/Clinical Supervisor.

 

JOB GOAL:

To support the instructional program by creating a climate of health and well being in the

district schools and by addressing the health needs of the school consistent with the goals

set forth by the Board of Education and within the resources provided by the Board.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains a complete, up-to-date health record system using available technology.

Keeps principal updated on services for students, and occurrence of any serious injuries.

Plans and conducts screenings, examinations, and health appraisals in accordance with

state law and district policy.

Monitors newly and currently enrolled students in order to ensure that state law and

district policy are implemented concerning health issues (i.e., immunization, medical

records).

Advises and counsels students, staff, and parents, as appropriate, concerning health

issues.

Makes referrals to school resources and/or community agencies as necessary.

Serves as consultant and resource person in health instruction and curriculum planning.

Facilitates the implementation of homebound instruction.

Provides input to the administration concerning the implementation of state law and the

development of district policies and procedures related to health issues.

Provides first aid as needed.

Assists emergency caregivers as applicable.

Maintains appropriate records as required.

Facilitates health appraisals for pupils refereed to the Child Study Team.

Participates in Child Study Team deliberations when applicable.

Makes recommendations to the principal regarding health and safety to promote a safe,

Healthy, and comfortable learning environment.

Administers medication in accordance with state law and district policy.

Maintains professional competence by doing professional reading and attending

appropriate workshops, courses, and conferences in keeping with the needs of the student

body and in accordance with district guidelines.

Communicates with parents/guardians as needed concerning their child’s health.

Cooperates and shares professionally with members of the district staff.

Keeps staff informed about relevant health issues.

Communicates with various health-related organizations in the community and

surrounding areas as needed for students and staff.

Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by

the principal.

Maintains confidentiality of student’s medical information, sharing only when relating to

his/her file.

Supervises un-licensed, assistant personnel (ie-health assistants) in the school setting.

Responsible for determining whether delegation of nursing care is appropriate in each

individual situation as per the State Nursing Practice Act & National Standards of

Nursing.

Keep principal informed of correspondences of parent notifications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use

hands to finger, handle, or feel, and talk or hear. 

The employee is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. 

The employee must lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color

vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Ten-month year.  Appropriate step on teaching salary schedule.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the school principal and in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Staff.
